This week I did some background research to find a theoretical basis for my topic.

Why is it better to learn in nature? What will children learn from nature?

“Report after report — from independent observers as well as participants themselves — indicate shifts in perseverance, problem-solving, critical thinking, leadership, teamwork, and resilience.” — Williams, D. R., and Dixon, P. S. (2013). Impact of garden-based learning on academic outcomes in schools: synthesis of research between 1990 and 2010. Rev. Educ. Res. 83, 211–235. DOI: 10.3102/0034654313475824

“Nature may promote learning by improving learners’ attention, levels of stress, self-discipline, interest, and enjoyment in learning, and physical activity and fitness.” — Mårtensson, F., Boldemann, C., Soderstrom, M., Blennow, M., Englund, J.-E., and Grahn, P. (2009). Outdoor environmental assessment of attention promoting settings for preschool children. Health Place 15, 1149–1157. DOI: 10.1016/j.healthplace.2009.07.002

“Similarly, over fifty studies point to nature playing a key role in the development of pro-environmental behavior, particularly by fostering an emotional connection to nature. ” — McCree, M., Cutting, R., and Sherwin, D. (2018). The hare and the tortoise go to forest school: taking the scenic route to academic attainment via emotional wellbeing outdoors. Early Child Dev. Care 188, 980–996. DOI: 10.1080/03004430.2018.1446430

What role does game in children’s development?

“Through the activities of didactic games, the children get motivated in an organized and creative way, according to their own abilities they get to know the world that surrounds them, and their mental and other capacities and characteristics. “; “The game is an activity that dominates children’s lives and has a special meaning in the development and education of children.” — Sonja Petrovska, Despina Sivevskaa, Oliver Cackova(2013). Role of the Game in the Development of Preschool Child

“The researchers found that video games and apps that were interactive and educational had a positive effect on children’s brain development. However, violent and exclusively entertaining media had a negative effect on child brain development.” — Blumberg, F. C., Deater‐Deckard, K., Calvert, S. L., Flynn, R. M., Green, C. S., Arnold, D., & Brooks, P. J. (2019). Digital Games as a Context for Children’s Cognitive Development: Research Recommendations and Policy Considerations. Social Policy Report, 32(1), 1–33. doi:10.1002/sop2.3

“Play and learning are dimensions that stimulate each other and could be seen as an indivisible entirety, which is a part of children’s experiencing, and which helps them create an understanding of their surrounding world in a lifelong process.” — Eva Johansson Göteborg University, Sweden. Play and learning — inseparable dimensions in preschool practice
